Although children must be knowledgeable when they graduate, they must also be healthy, engaged, responsible, and caring people. The My SPACE Program is our child development enhancement support available to each student at the ARK School geared towards a holistic approach not only focused on academic progress but on well-rounded growth in all five but interdependent areas; Physical, Social, Emotional, Cognitive and Language.
Our students are tracked on their developmental milestones and receive well researched instructional content purposed to enhance the five developmental areas:
Social skills development – how a child develops friendships and other relationships, as well how a child handles conflict with peers (e.g. initiating and maintaining interactions, positive and respectful interactions, confidence, self-control, self-awareness, assertiveness, self-responsibility, team work).
Emotional Skills development – how a child learns about emotions, to self-regulate their emotions and to be able to cope with difficult situations (e.g. empathy, emotional awareness, emotional expression, emotional regulation, confidence and self-drive).
Cognitive Skills development – the development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children to think about and understand the world around them and content learnt. (Reasoning, Processing, Creativity, Planning, Attention, Memory and Problem Solving).
Physical Skills development – development of larger healthy movements that a child makes with his arms, legs, feet, or his entire body as well as fine motor skills necessary to engage in smaller, more precise movements, normally using the hands and fingers (e.g. finger and hand grip – handwriting, healthy eating and hygiene, growth changes education and play).
Language Skills Development – Learning to understand, express and enjoy language is the critical basis for learning to read and write (e.g. Oral language fluency, verbal and reading comprehension, letter and word identification.
The Leader in Me tool is a child centered comprehensive resource adopted from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People tailored to the school setting. Our LIM tool provides our school with the vision and language to lead the school in a way that further addresses all areas of development. The students are given opportunities to discover the leader in them as they are taught (through lessons, activities, experiences) how to lead self (private victory), lead others (public victory) and learn the value of living a balanced life. Below is a summary of each of the overall habits that your child continues to learn about through the LIM tool:
Habit 1: Be Proactive (You’re in Charge)
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win)
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood (Listen before You Talk)
Habit 6: Synergize (Together Is Better)
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best)
The My SPACE program team encompasses the entire school staff, with the first level support and oversight of a qualified School psychologist. It is a continuous COLLABORATION with teachers and all other school staff who are most influential in your chil d’s progress as they spend the most time with your child. Everyone is Involved!
Student Delivery: Age appropriate, activity based lessons and out of class experiences are provided at class (all students) and/or group or individual level depending on the needs and/or ‘skills enhancement requirement’ identified or recommended for a child. This is done by the teachers and school psychologist.
Teacher Involvement: Our teachers are consistently engaged in the support process as part of the My SPACE team to follow up on individual students and engage at class level. Continuous knowledge enhancement trainings and resource support is also key.
Developmental follow up: Milestone assessment, identification and intervention is done through a multi-layered process that engages teachers in collaboration with the school psychologist.
Parental involvement: Parent sessions, events and shared family support resources to support collaboration for our students’ holistic benefit is our culture. Parents are contacted on individual basis where required and are also able to request meetings to discuss a child’s needs. Student developmental reports drafted by the School Psychologist in collaboration with class teachers are shared on a termly basis with suggested activities where necessary
